Abstract: In the context of the forthcoming general elections in Brazil the article
offers thoughts for reflection on the issues dealing with politics and the Church
and vice versa. Beginning with the Church’s readiness to engage in dialogue, in
the light of the II Vat. Council document Gaudium et Spes, the author presents
an analysis of an overall view and structural elements which show forth a polarity
of the Church concentrating its focus on itself. A comment is inserted on the
“Note” of the Congregation of Doctrine and Faith of 2002 which disagrees with
the statement about “pluralism as a key to moral relativism”. It deals with the
right of nature in dialectics of secularization and draws attention to the autonomy
in respect to the political community and the Church. The concept of “laity” is
being analyzed, following a comment on the National Program of Human rights
(PNDH 3) and an analysis of the issue concerning Catholics engaged in political
life in the USA. Mention is made of “the political relevance of faith in regard to
a political reform” and finally the need to overcome corruption as required on
ethical and political basis.
