Povos Indígenas na Amazônia Brasileira

Resumo

Resumo: Uma leitura contextualizada da realidade da Amazônia permite
observar a gravidade da situação em que se encontram tanto o ecossistema
quanto os povos indígenas que ali habitam. Atualmente, 17% da Amazônia (26
mil quilômetros quadrados) está desmatada em função dos investimentos do
agronegócio e das madeireiras. E nos últimos 500 anos, 1477 povos indígenas
foram extintos. Organizações, como o Conselho Indigenista Missionário- CIMI,
ajudam os povos indígenas a resistirem em seus territórios. Isso favorece para
reverter, ainda que timidamente, o quadro de extermínio dos índios, ajuda-os a
assumirem a própria identidade e a lutarem por direitos. Mas todo projeto a favor
da Amazônia deve ser global, uma vez que ela é parte do mundo globalizado.
Nesse projeto, da Igreja e dos organismos que defendem os povos indígenas,
é preciso ouvir a voz dos sujeitos da Amazônia, compreender o direito à alteridade
e ao território, condenar todo tipo de invasão. Assim, é possível sonhar
com o protagonismo indígena, tendo atitudes proféticas no meio dos conflitos
e acreditando num mundo melhor para todos.

Abstract: Within the context of the Amazon region a wider viewpoint is had on the
crucial situation of the ecosystem affecting the autochtonous inhabitants. As of
today, 17% of the Amazon region (26 thousand square kilometers) is disforested
so that its area becomes available for plantation and for other uses of the lumber
companies. In the last 500 years some 1477 native populations became extinct.
Organizations such as CIMI (Conselho Indigenista Missionario) intent to help the
native populations to resist further attempts at devastating this area. The result
is in favor to the natives by preventing their extermination and helping them to
reassert their identity as they engage in demanding their legitimate rights. It is
to be noted however that the project in favor of the Amazon region has a global
dimension since it is part of the world as a whole. The Church as well as other
world organisations lend their voices for the defense of the native populations
against aggressions of all kinds in detriment ot the territory and its inhabitants.
